Stop the War Coalition on Starmer Pushing for Increased Military Spending and Pro-Palestine Demonstrations

Starmer’s New Militarism

📣 Call to Action 📣

Starmer is leading the charge in Europe for a massive ramping up of military spending. The anti-war war movement must take action. ‘Spend, spend, spend on defence and deterrence,’ said Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at Thursday’s EU emergency summit. The summit’s goal was to provide support for Ukraine, following the very public row between Zelensky and Trump, and to firm up an €800 billion militarisation of Europe.  It is urgent all our groups start organising meetings on this move to militarism. Feel free to choose your own title on the themes Welfare not Warfare – No troops to Ukraine – Stop arming Israel – No to Starmer’s Military Spending. Contact the office for assistance with speakers. It’s urgent we organise and continue to build the movement. To find a local meeting near you click here.
We also urge all our supporters and groups to hold street stalls to set out the case against this dangerous militarism. We have produced a petition ‘No troops to Ukraine: Welfare not Warfare’ which you can download here. Please use in workplaces, colleges, communities and on the streets.

Welfare not Warfare Petition

Unions and workers must reject Labour’s military surge – profit for arms companies is not money in workers’ pockets. Propose our new model resolution Oppose Starmer’s Military Spending – Welfare not Warfare at your local trade union branch and demand a policy of peace through security for all.

Model Resolution on Military Spending

Europe has convinced itself that Putin is the new Hitler and an existential threat, but as Lindsey German points out Russia ‘is quite incapable of managing a Hitler-like invasion of Europe,’ but it has made clear that any European ‘peacekeeping’ troops in Ukraine would be seen as a declaration of war by NATO.

Nevertheless Starmer continues his call to arms and Rachel Reeves is helping prepare the way. Ramping up military spending at a time when the chancellor is already proposing swathes of cuts will hurt us all and will be a rallying cry for the far right here and across Europe. Starmer and his EU allies are playing with fire. It’s time to get organised.

National Palestine Demonstration – Saturday 15 March

We have reached the de-facto end of the ceasefire and Netanyahu and Trump are preparing the ground for the resumption of full-scale war.

Trump has issued a final warning to Hamas and the people of Gaza, threatening that if all remaining captives (and the bodies of those dead) are not immediately released, ‘you are dead’, adding ‘Make a smart decision. Release the hostages now, or there will be hell to pay later!’

Meanwhile Israel continues its genocidal war in all but name. Using food and other aid as weapons of war in Gaza, and rapidly escalating attacks on Palestinians in the West Bank.

This is why we must march on 15 March. But the British establishment is pulling out all the stops to prevent us. The Met Police are creating obstacles to our planning of the route and refusing to let us know what conditions they will impose.

Read our Statement on March 15 demonstration

As we watch and listen in horror to Trump and Netanyahu’s barbaric comments our government continues to sell arms to Israel and tries to intimidate our movement. Not content with charging StW vice-chair Chris Nineham and PSC’s Director following the 18 January protest, the Met Police have now formally requested interviews with other leaders of the movement. Stop the War officers Lindsey German, Alex Kenny and Andrew Murray have been called in for questioning along with Stephen Kapos, 87 year old Jewish Holocaust survivor, actor Khalid Abdalla and the chairs of CND and Friends of Al-Aqsa. See our statement here.

The response to these attacks has been defiant – there’s been an outpouring of messages of solidarity to those targeted and our Defend the Right to Protest meetings have been hugely popular. It is clear the government attacks cannot dampen the resilience of the movement.

Please do what you can to build next week’s national demonstration. It is imperative as many as possible join the protest on 15 March.

Leaflets are available from the StW office, email us and let us know if you wish to collect or have some delivered.

Major escalations in Ukraine war

This week has seen major escalations in the Ukraine war as President Biden gave permission for Ukraine to use US-made missiles to attack Russia. What could possibly go wrong?

As Lindsey German said, “Biden looks like he intends to end his failed presidency with a bang. The danger is that he will take a lot of people with him.”

Immediately following the use of US-made Tactical Missile Systems missiles to attack targets inside Russian territory, UK Storm Shadow missiles were fired by Ukraine into Russia. Where US missiles go, British missiles are not far behind.

Stop the War has condemned the firing of UK & US missiles into Russian territory. This action clearly risks igniting an all-out war between Western powers and Russia. Russia has now retaliated firing Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles into Ukraine. Luckily without nuclear warheads, but with the lowering of the nuclear threshold by Russia the possibility of a future nuclear retaliation is very real.

Starmer’s action was conducted with no democratic oversight, with no vote or discussion in parliament. The price we pay for Starmer’s blind support for the Ukraine war is yet to be seen, but the government has already begun preparing for acts of sabotage against critical infrastructure, such as power stations.

The US has shut its embassy in Kyiv and issued warnings to its citizens in the region. Italy, Spain and Greece followed suit.

Ukrainians themselves have had enough of this war, according to a recent opinion poll over half of the population want to see the war end as soon as possible. In every region in the country fewer than 50% now support the war continuing.

Stop the War has been calling for deescalation and peace talks for almost three years. Over 1000 days into a war that has already cost the lives of 12,162 civilians, 659 of them children, and which has injured many more, it is critical Western powers pull back from the brink, before it is too late.

Workplace Day of Action & National Demo

The Workplace Day of Action is less than a week away, on Thursday 28 November. Let us know what your plans for the day are and don’t forget to tell the world what your are doing by using the #Workplaces4Palestine. You can read here about some of the wide-ranging workplace action taking place around the country.

The day is backed by the TUC who have put out a call for action to all their members. Suggested activities include simple solidarity acts – such as wearing a Palestine badge or scarf to work, a bake sale, a two minute silence, or a lunchtime walkout and rally. Other ideas can be found here.

If you would like to put a poster in your window you can download one here. Our downloadable posters include Stop Arming IsraelGaza: Stop the Massacre and Free Palestine.

The situation in Gaza continues to be unimaginably horrific. And in the West Bank children are being killed at unprecedented rate with huge rises in attacks by Israeli settlers and soldiers. ICC arrest warrants for Netanyahu and Gallant are long overdue.

Trump’s election was met with cheers by right-wing Israeli settlers. His nomination of Mike Huckabee as the next US ambassador to Israel, tells us all we need to know about Trump’s view – Huckabee is a Christian-Zionist, he has repeatedly spoken of his strong support for illegal settlements in the West Bank claiming “the Jews have a God-given right to reclaim land given to their ancestors.”

The UK must comply with the ICC, stop all arms sales to Israel, anything less continues the UK’s complicity in genocide.

The genocide in Gaza, the relentless persecution of Palestinians in the West Bank, and the increasingly precarious state of the Middle East are all reasons why we call on our supporters to join us at the next national demonstration on 30 November. We will be marching from Park Lane to Whitehall. Book your travel now!

If you are able to help StW on the day please email us.

Stop the War Coalition’s Anti-War Convention

💥 Anti-War Convention – 17 November💥

📣 New speaker announcement 📣

We are delighted to announce that independent journalist, Matt Kennard and President of SOAS Palestine society, Haya Adam, will be speaking at next Sunday’s anti-war convention, alongside a host of leading experts and activists.

The convention could not have been more timely – the return of President Trump raises many questions. What do his campaign promises of peace mean in reality? How will this most pro-Israeli of Presidents square his promise to end wars with urging Netanyahu to ‘finish the job’? Will his blank cheque to Israel lead to all-out war with Iran? What will happen with the Ukraine war? With NATO? With China?

We will also be discussing the next steps for the movement, Islamophobia and the current climate of police repression. These issues and many more will be addressed at the anti-war convention next Sunday. Make sure you are part of the day. Get your ticket now!

There will be a number of workshops on the day, so you too can take part in the discussion. Sessions include:

  • Trump, Starmer and the next steps for the movement
  • The Middle East on fire: the US, Israel and western imperialism
  • Normalising a nightmare: why the western media colludes over Palestine
  • Imperialism, Islamophobia and the far right
  • NATO, Ukraine and the Asia Pacific
  • State of war: the police, Palestine an the politics of protest
  • Endless war? Sudan and the crisis in Africa.

Workplace Day of Action 28 November

Please get organised for the next workplace day of action on 28 November. The horrors in Gaza and across the Middle East necessitate us to do what we can in our workplaces to escalate action against the genocide and demand that the government stops arming Israel.

Ideas for actions include:

  • Make it a ‘Wear a badge or scarf for Palestine day’
  • Organise a two minute silence at work for Palestine
  • Call a walkout and a rally at lunchtime with speakers
  • Organise a stall outside work as people arrive
  • Invite everyone to a Palestinian lunch or a bake sale
  • Do a collection or a petition for the movement
  • Get everyone to change their zoom background to the Palestinian flag.

Send us an email to let us know what is happening for Palestine in your place of work. If you would like to find out more and get ideas for organising come along to the online meeting taking place on Wednesday at 6:30pm. Zoom link here. It’s not a moment too soon to start organising. Leaflets are available for collection in the stop the war office.
