Open Britain on Sunak’s Lying Speech and Scrapping of Green Policies

September 22, 2023

‘Dear David,

Rishi Sunak’s infamous “seven bins” speech yesterday will serve as a permanent reminder of this government’s political desperation, complete lack of morality, and utter disregard for the democratic process.

After leaked documents revealed a government rollback of climate change policies, Sunak hastily attempted to get on top of it. The speech yesterday set out his “new approach” to Net Zero, which is to say he made up a bunch of fake policies and then claimed to have scrapped them.

Worse than that, though, a very real rollback of UK climate policy has now been forcefully imposed on us by an unpopular minority-rule government, tossing out promises made in the Conservative’s 2019 manifesto – the last one they were actually voted in on. Our unelected billionaire PM is therefore not only subverting the will of the British public, but undermining the promises of his own party as well.

In a bizarre twist, the language Sunak used to justify his undemocratic decision made it sound like he’d been reading our mail-outs. He claimed that we need to “change the way our politics works”, and build “space for better, more honest debate.” He called for more transparency, as well as “scrutiny and debate” over government policy. Good rhetoric – but he’s deploying it to justify unilateral government action that no one wants.

Don’t be fooled – Sunak has no plans to do any of those things. Instead, he’s looking to work alongside Liz Truss and the fossil-fuel industry to pull yet another one over on the British public. He’s pretending that Net Zero isn’t popular (which it is) and that he’s just saying what’s on everyone’s mind. It’s a desperate bid to appeal to swing-seat Conservatives – and it isn’t likely to work.

Rishi’s words may be false, but the consequences will be all too real. On top of the government’s abject failure to secure investment in offshore wind and the expansion of North Sea oil and gas drilling earlier this year, this means that Britain will stray further and further from a sustainable future. This decision will have a tangible impact on future generations.

The fake populism of the Conservatives around climate issues (backed by the oil lobby, the tabloids, and the right wing think-tanks) will not go away until we seriously reform our political system. Sunak’s faction of Conservatives that stand behind this choice – Liz Truss, Jacob Rees-Mogg, Kemi Badenoch, Suella Braverman, and others – will continue to try it on if they think they can win.

If we had a political system that worked, they’d never have a chance. We’ll keep fighting for it as long as it takes. Support us below if you can – we’ve got some big plans for the fall as the next election looms.

All the best,

The Open Britain team
