Last week Nigel Farage was criticised again for his comments about Muslims following the massacre of the Charlie Hebdo staff in Paris and the attack on a Jewish supermarket. The Fuehrer of the party for the arch reactionaries and xenophobes, had said that while he recognised that the extremists were only a minority of Muslims, nevertheless there was a problem within the Islamic community that had allowed them to arise. Critics claimed that Farage had accused British Muslims of forming a fifth column within Britain itself.
This is actually text-book right-wing Islamaphobia. Literally. One of the anti-racist sites I was reading a little while ago stated that right-wing politicians and xenophobic groups had accused Muslims of forming a ‘fifth column’ in Britain promoting terrorism.
Which is precisely what the Kipper Duce had done.
There is absolutely no hiding it. Farage corresponds precisely to the text-book descriptions of populist, racist politicos and the threat they pose to society and specifically members of the religious or ethnic communities they criticise and attack. The affable man of the people image is just that – an image. It’s as false as that of Hitler as Herr Average German during the War, who stood for folksy, peasant German values. Farage is a menace, and its now so obvious it’s undeniable. He should be treated as such.

Fair point, Andy. I put that in because, according to analysts of UKIP, like the book Revolt on the Right, most of UKIP’s supporters are people over 50. But as that remark has caused so much unintended offence, I’ve amended it.

I think it points to a deeper malaise in society. It’s a spree killing, where someone finally snaps, picks up a gun and starts shooting. There was book on such murder sprees published in the 1990s called ‘Hunting Humans’. The title was taken from the words a killer said to his wife just before he went on the rampage. She asked where he was going with his gun. And the book’s title was his answer.
The problem with such people is that you really don’t know when or where they’ll appear. It’s fairly clear that Bird had dreadful psychological problems, and it seems that family problems and the row with the other taxi drivers contributed to his violence. The reason why they shoot randomly is because they’re not angry at anyone in particular. They just hate everyone, and so shoot indiscriminately at whoever’s unfortunate enough to be there.
But it is really shocking, and definitely shows that Muslims ain’t alone in seeking violent release for the pressures they feel. I just feel very sorry for the victims, their families and the emergency services, who have to clean up the mess, literally and metaphorically.
Another senseless murder. Literally.
