Evolve Politics on the Racism and Islamophobia of Tory Facebook Group Supporting Boris Johnson

March 1, 2019

After his article showing up Tweezer’s hypocrisy about Labour’s anti-Semitism crisis, which showed how far more racist and anti-Semitic the Tories were, Mike over at Vox Political has posted up another piece reporting an article on EvolvePolitics about another piece of virulent racism in the Tory party. This is a Facebook group set up to support Boris Johnson as the leader of the Conservatives. The group is modded by Martyn York, a Tory councillor in Wellingborough, and has as two of its admins Dorinda Bailey, a failed Tory candidate for Newcastle Under Lyme’s council, and David Abbott, an Independent councillor and deputy mayor of Houghton Regis. Mike has opened his article on them with a photo of the infamous 1964 Tory election poster urging people to vote Labour if they want a person of colour to be their neighbour. Or to vote Tory if they already have them, as the Tories will have them all repatriated. And no wonder. The group’s proof that the vile racism Cameron tried to purge from the party is still alive and thriving.

The group has posts and comments attacking immigration, ethnic minorities and particularly Muslims in viciously racist and violent language. Muslims are abused as ‘ragheads’, ‘muzrats’, Blacks and ethnic minorities are called ‘wogs’, and immigrants and Black and Asian Brits are told in very coarse language to return to Poland, Africa or simply leave the UK. One of those so reviled is Naz Shah, while another is a recent migrant, working to support herself and her family, from Poland. Sadiq Khan is called a ‘conniving little muzrat’, and immigrants compared to cockroaches. The posters and commenters to the Group also joke about bombing mosques and shooting immigrants. There are also posts promoting the anti-Semitic conspiracy theories about the Rothschilds and Jews encouraging immigration to destroy White Europeans. The Black MPs Diane Abbott and Dawn Butler are reviled as ‘monkeys’, while another said that the Black MP Fiona Onasanya declared that she should be put on a banana boat and sent back home.

EvolvePolitics quotes a statement from the Muslim Council of Britain about the Group stating that it shows that there is a real problem with racism and islamophobia in the Tories. It also states that polls show that half of all members of the Tory party believe that Islam is a threat to the British way of life, and they reiterate their call for the party to launch an inquiry into it to root it out. EvolvePolitics’ article also notes that the Tories came under pressure last year to root out islamophobia after there was a ‘positive cascade of incidents’ involving Tory politicos and members. Despite this, Brandon Lewis, the Tory chairman, who promised that there would be ‘zero tolerance’ for it, has done nothing.

The article concludes that these revelations will reignite calls from all sides for an urgent investigation of an increasingly worrying situation.

I have to say that I doubt any action will be taken, as the Conservative party consistently depends on racist support, which the right-wing press are complicit in mustering. Zelo Street has recently posted an article on this, which is exactly right. The virulent racists, islamophobes, conspiracy theorists and Europhobes will continue to be permitted and welcomed in the party’s ranks, so long as they don’t cause anything too embarrassing to the party. Meanwhile the Tories will hypocritically exploit and smear Labour as a party Jew-haters at every opportunity to denigrate them in the eyes of liberal, anti-racist opinion.

ISIS Destruction of Antiquities and Respect for Archaeology in Iran

April 12, 2015

Nimrud Map

Map of Nimrud drawn in 1856 by Felix Jones

The Independent reported today that ISIS had released a video of themselves destroying the ancient Babylonian city of Nimrud. Its destruction was reported back in March, but this is the first time footage has been shown of it. The video shows the terrorists attacking the city and its antiquities with pneumatic drills, anglegrinders and sledgehammers. They then laid explosives, and blew the site up.

Irinia Bokova, the director general of UNESCO, the section of the UN that oversees the world’s cultural heritage, denounced the destruction, saying that the “deliberate destruction of cultural heritage constitutes a war crime”.

I couldn’t agree more.

The Indie’s article can be read at: http://www.msn.com/en-gb/news/other/isis-video-shows-complete-destruction-of-ancient-city-of-nimrud-in-iraq/ar-AAaTuAG?ocid=OIE9HP

I’ve already blogged about ISIS’ destruction of Nimrud, and the other cultural treasures of Mosul, and the Christian and Muslim shrines to the patriarch Seth, revered by Moslems as the prophet Sheth, St. George and others. ISIS have claimed that they are destroying these antiquities because they are somehow blasphemous or un-Islamic. In fact, they are attacking them purely because these monuments don’t conform to their own, extremely narrow religious views. They’re a deliberate, calculated assault on the cultural heritage and identity of Iraq’s people. ISIS fear them because they present an alternative, secular national and religious pluralist identity to the absolute conformity ISIS wish to foist on them.

It’s also been suggested that more worldly, venal motives were involved in Nimrud’s destruction. ISIS may have been looting the site to raise money to buy more arms by selling the antiquities illegally. They levelled the city to disguise what they’d done. So their claim that they were destroying the city for religious reasons may have been just a load of lies to disguise what they really are: a bunch of thieves and grave robbers.

Archaeology in Iran

ISIS’ contempt for the region’s heritage contrasts with Iran, where, with some qualifications, archaeology is still valued. John Simpson in one of his books described the way an angry mob was ready to destroy the depictions of the Persian shahs at Naqsh-i-Rustem in the 1979 revolution, but were prevented from doing so by the carvings’ guard. He stopped them by telling them that they were instead depictions of Hassan and Hussein, the two sons of the Imam Ali, the founder of Shi’ism.

In the 1990s there was a minimal Western archaeological presence in Iran, though I believe it has been expanded since then. I once bumped into one of the lecturers in the archaeological department at Uni nearly ten years ago, who had just returned from excavating an early Islamic city in Iran.

And a few years ago the British Museum loaned the Cyrus Cylinder, shown below, to the Islamic Republic.

Cyrus Cylinder

The Cyrus Cylinder records the conquest of Babylonia by the great Persian king Cyrus, or Kourash, as he is known in Persian. After the conquest, he issued an edict permitting the peoples exiled in Babylon to return to their homelands, returned their gods, and assisted in the reconstruction of their temples. These included the Jews, who returned to Israel, for which the Persians are praised in the Bible.

I was taught at College that Islam similarly regarded Zoroastrians as ‘Peoples of the Book’, who, like Jews and Christians, worshipped the one God, and whose worship was therefore protected.

British Museum’s loan of the Cylinder to Iran was of major diplomatic and cultural significance. Firstly, it was party of a general thaw in relations between Britain and the Islamic Republic. Secondly, it also showed the confidence that the Museum in the Cylinder’s safety. The repatriation of cultural artefacts looted by Western scholars from the other cultures around the world is a major issue in archaeology and the heritage sector. Many nations and ethnic groups are rightly angered at the appropriation of valuable or important religious items from their cultures, including human remains. A few years ago, for example, BBC 2 screened a series looking behind the scenes at the British Museum. Amongst the Museum’s other work, it showed the delicate negotiations surrounding the repatriation of the remains of Aboriginal Tasmanians to their descendants.

Other items remain, and their retention is immensely controversial. The Elgin Marbles is a case in point.

The Museum has, however, a policy of not returning antiquities to countries where their safety can’t be guaranteed. The looting and destruction of ancient monuments and archaeological finds is a real problem, particularly in the developing world. And it isn’t unknown here either. There have been digs in Britain, that have been wrecked and the finds looted by Nighthawks. There have also been a number of curators and museum directors, who have been caught illegally selling off objects from the very collections they were supposed to be maintaining.

The loan of the Cyrus Cylinder to Iran, by contrast, showed that the British authorities had every confidence that their fellows in Iran would respect and value it, and that Britain and Iran could have good relations in the exploration of that nation’s ancient past and its treasures.

This is another excellent reason why the Repugs are stupid to want another war with Iran. Apart from destabilising yet another nation and brutalising its people, purely for the profit of the oil and arms industries, it could result in the same destruction of antiquities as in Iraq.

And as in Iraq, the world would again be much the poorer.

Britain First Urges Followers to Support UKIP, Vows to Track Down Kent Protesters

March 23, 2015

The Independent has also run this story, Vote Ukip, says far-right group Britain First, reporting that the Fuehrer of Britain First, Paul Golding, has urged his mighty legions of stormtroopers to vote for the Kippers. The Indie’s article states that Golding’s message is repeated in leaflets and letters produced by Islamophobic party. It states that Golding claims that the groups own activities in ‘Muslim ghettoes’ and ‘major UKIP gains’ will become a ‘game changer’ to turn 2015 into the year of Britain First and UKIP, leading to a ‘resurgence of British patriotism’.

The Indie’s article states that the party has its origins in anti-abortion campaigns and Ulster nationalism. It has been responsible for organising ‘Christian patrols’, supposedly to counter the ‘Muslim patrol’ set up by Islamic radicals to harass drinkers and gay people in parts of London. They have also invaded mosques to hand out Bibles to worshippers.

Farage has denounced extreme Right-wing parties, like Britain First, and the offers to support him and the Kippers. The article says

A Ukip spokesman said it was not embarrassing but farcical that Britain First was supporting them. “We’re just not where they think we are,” he said. “On the fringes of our politics are nutters and we don’t want them anywhere near us.”

Golding for Britain First stated that he knew why Farage wanted to distance himself and his party from them, and urged them to ignore the blather and vote for the Kippers.

The article’s at http://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/vote-ukip-say-farright-group-britain-first-10126389.html.

The anti-Kipper site, SlatUKIP, has posted this piece showing that Paul Golding has urged his squadristi to hunt down and publish the names and addresses of the protestors who turned up at the Purple Duce’s pub in Downe at the weekend.

Golding anti-Farage Protesters

This is an old tactic used by the Far Right for decades. They tried it against a women’s rights organisation in Brighton back in the 1970s, but mysteriously stopped when the local Socialists and Trades Union newsletter started publishing their names and addresses.

As for the ‘Christian Patrols’ and mosque invasions, Hope Not Hate has pointed out that very few, if any, of Britain First’s members ever actually go to church. Instead, they show their deep Christian piety by getting drunk and urinating against church walls.

They look pretty much like the same old bunch of Neo-Nazis, who are just using a veneer of Christian piety and Islamophobia to disguise their simple, old-fashioned racism. The Indie’s article on them notes that they stand or ‘assisted repatriation’ and sending convicted foreign criminals back to their countries of origin without recourse to the court.

As for the Kippers claiming that they ‘are not where’ Britain First think they are, unfortunately a series of racist and fanatically intolerant and Islamophobic comments by their members, from the Purple Duce downwards, show that this is very much where they are.
