Trial of Alleged Members of National Action for Terrorism

June 12, 2018

I got this message this afternoon from the anti-racism, anti-Fascism and anti-religious extremism organisation, Hope Not Hate. Six people, alleged to be members of the banned terrorist group National Action, are on trial for terrorism, including the notorious Jack Renshaw. Hope Not Hate said

Hi David,

We wanted to share some important news with you.

A trial started this morning at the Old Bailey of six alleged members of National Action, a banned terrorist organisation. One of the six, Jack Renshaw, has pleaded guilty to preparing an act of terrorism by plotting to murder Labour MP Rosie Cooper, and threatening to kill a police officer, Vicky Henderson. Another is charged with assisting in that plot. All six deny the charges of membership of National Action.

This trial has come about, and the evidence against Jack Renshaw, was brought to the attention of the authorities due to the direct work of HOPE not hate. Our CEO, Nick Lowles, our Head of Research, Matthew Collins, and one of our informants will be key prosecution witnesses.

This trial is serious. National Action is a dangerous nazi group, banned as a terrorist organisation in 2016. They have their roots in the BNP’s youth wing. They’ve conducted harassment campaigns, and had a slick social media operation. They have long talked publicly about being ready to commit acts of violence.

Because of some strict legal restrictions, there is a limit on what we can say publicly during the trial. We will try and update you all as much as we’re allowed to over the next weeks and hopefully we will be able to tell the full story once the trial is over. In the meantime, we’ve set up a page on our website so you can follow how things pan out.

Thanks for all of your support,

-The HOPE not hate team

The web page is at https://www.hopenothate.org.uk/2018/06/12/update-important-trial-old-bailey/, and adds this piece of information

This court case has come about because of the great work of our research team and the courage of a young man who operated inside National Action and has stepped forward to testify about their activities, the centrepiece of which was a plot to kill Labour MP Rosie Cooper and a police officer.

This trial of alleged NA members is expected to last for several weeks. Although the case can be reported on by the media, HOPE not hate staff are under strict restrictions to remain silent until they have given evidence in court. We will be updating hopenothate.org.uk regularly with what’s happening in court.

At the end of the trial we’ll be free to tell the full story of how National Action was stopped in its tracks – and what the government must do to defeat the growing threat of far-right terrorism.

Vox Political: Thomas Mair due to be Tried for Terrorism in November

June 23, 2016

Mike over at Vox Political has also put up this piece, reporting that Thomas Mair has appeared before Mr Justice Saunders at the Old Bailey via video link. Mair is accused of murdering the MP, Jo Cox, last Thursday. The date of his trial is set as 14th November, and he has been charged with terrorism. At least this time he has had the decency to give a proper answer when asked what his name was. When he appeared before the beak last week, he claimed it was ‘Death to Traitors, Freedom for Britain’.

See Mike’s article at: http://voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/06/23/terrorist-trial-of-thomas-mair-to-take-place-in-november/

Now it’s important to remember that Mair is innocent until proven guilty. But the evidence against him seems very conclusive. That hasn’t stopped the Kippers, Brexiters and other members of the racist right from trying to claim that he is somehow innocent. Hope Not Hate and other bloggers and organisations, include Vox Political, have reported and commented on the stupid conspiracy theories that sprung up like poisonous mushrooms after Cox’s murder. According to these, it wasn’t Mair, but a false flag operation to muster support from the Remain camp. This was according to Francois Asselineau, a conspiracy theorist with form for this kind of stupid, right-wing pronouncements over in La Patrie across the Channel. The man, who actually saw him carrying out the attack has an Arab name, and so was derided as a ‘lying Muslim’. Actually, in his clothes, demeanour and accent the witness looked as Yorkshire and British as anybody else. Not that it should have made any difference if he had worn a kaftan, skull cap and traditional Asian trousers.

I’ve also been amazed at the attempts to blame the attack on Mair’s poor mental health, rather than his membership of extreme right-wing organisations, like the pro-Apartheid Springbok club, the London Swinton Circle, and contacts with the National Alliance, the main American Nazi organisation. Instead it’s because he suffered from depression, or OCD -Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. It’s not a convincing excuse, and neither of those conditions, on their own, will provoke someone to murder.

Let’s take depression. I think Mike put up a piece yesterday from a neuroscientist, who said that in her medical experience, depressives don’t have the energy to murder anyone. The unfortunates who suffer from the condition have all the energy drained out of them. That’s true. I’ve come across people with the condition, who have done nothing but lie in a darkened room when they’ve been suffering from an attack. Many depressives, and obsessive-compulsives, for that matter, simply take to sleep to try and get away from the thoughts and ruminations that are troubling them. They neither have the energy nor inclination for violence.

As for Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, many of those who suffer from it, don’t do anything but feel forced to carry out repetitive rituals, such as washing themselves over and over again, in case something terrible might happen. At their most severe, these rituals can take up someone’s entire day, and affect not just their lives, but the lives of their families. But people, who spend hours checking to make sure they’ve properly locked the doors and windows, despite knowing that they have, don’t usually entertain thoughts of killing anyone.

Of course, part of the illness is that thoughts that cause anxiety may be dwelt upon, and for those hostile to immigration, that will include thoughts about the threat posed by immigrants. Now I think it’s fair to say that there is a danger of this, not just because of the emotive nature of the immigration debate, but also because of the genuine threat of Islamist terrorism. But again, having those thoughts doesn’t necessarily mean you have to act them out. If someone is so ill with depression and anxiety, that they seek medical help, then they know they’re ill. Which means that they can also recognise that their anxieties and the terrible ideas and fears running through their minds don’t necessarily correspond to reality. One antidote to fears about immigrants and immigration is simply thinking about the many decent people, who’ve come to this country over its history. Simply taking a trip on the bus, where you can see ordinary people of all races and backgrounds talking about banal, everyday matters like the weather, problems with the car and the awful track, what a prat the boss is, the cost of living and the footie, should help to allay any fears that Blacks or Asians are terrible monsters threatening the White race.

And backing this up is the knowledge of how vile the real Nazis are. As shown by the Holocaust, which is enough to depress and strike fear into anybody. But you don’t even have to go that far. Just the ordinary thuggery of the NF is sufficient for most people. Some of the Conservative politicians, who initially supported the National Front in the 1970s dropped them when they realised just what a violent outfit the NF was, and especially its policy of recruiting football hooligans and bootboys to attack non-Whites and left-wingers.

Mair doesn’t seem to have done any of this. He doesn’t seem to have tried to challenge his own racism by dwelling on the horrors of the concentration camps, or the unremarkable decency of ordinary folk. Nor was he determined by the far-right’s violence. In fact, his purchase of $600 worth of books on how manufacture home-made guns and ammunition from the publishing branch of the National Alliance, shows he was all too prepared to be involved with it.

Mental illness alone didn’t motivate Mair to kill Jo Cox, if indeed it was him. Sheer, vicious racism and a bitter hatred of those he considered ‘race traitors’ did.

CounterPunch on British Spies’ Recruitment of Islamist Fighters against Syria

May 7, 2016

On April 5 CounterPunch posted an article on their blog examining the number of Islamist extremists, who the British intelligence agencies had tried to recruit, including a number, who had then been caught travelling to Syria. They concluded that there are very strong reasons for believing that the spooks are trying to recruitment them as part of a strategy to overturn Assad’s regime.

The article begins by noting that British intelligence was responsible for the ‘dodgy dossier’, the spurious intelligence document claiming that Saddam Hussein possessed weapons of mass destruction, which provided the pretext for Blair to join Bush’s invasion. They then note that 500 British citizens have gone to Syria, 50 of whom have subsequently been killed in fighting. They then discuss the individual cases of those who have been approached by the spooks. These include:

Michael Adebolajo, one of the killers of Lee Rigby;

Three sisters from Bradford, who decamped to Syria. It seems they had been contacted by NECTU, the North East Counter Terrorism Unit, who had actively encouraged them to go to Syria to contact their brother, who was already there;

Mozzam Begg, who claimed MI5 had given him permission to train recruits for Syria;

Aimen Dean, who in Radio 4 interview claimed he had been recruited by MI6. Part of his duties included training impressionable Muslims to fight in Syria;

Bherlin Gildo, who had been intercepted travelling from Copenhagen to Manila to attend a terrorist training camp. His trial at the Old Bailey collapsed when it became apparent that if it carried on, it would lead to embarrassing revelations about Britain’s spies;

Siddharta Dhar, who was caught trying to travel to Syria for the sixth time. The intelligence services had also attempted to recruit him;

And the original ‘Jihadi John’, Mohammed Emwazi, was also known to the British intelligence service, who had also tried to recruit him.

They conclude:

These cases demonstrate a couple of irrefutable points. Firstly, the claim that the security services would have needed more power and resources to have prevented these abscondances is clearly not true. Since 1995, the Home Office has operated what it calls a ‘Warnings Index’: a list of people ‘of interest’ to any branch of government, who will then be ‘flagged up’ should they attempt to leave the country. Given that every single one of these cases was well known to the authorities, the Home Office had, for whatever reason, decided either not to put them on the Warnings Index, or to ignore their attempts to leave the country when they were duly flagged up. That is, the government decided not to use the powers already at its disposal to prevent those at the most extreme risk of joining the Syrian insurgency from doing so.

Secondly, these cases show that British intelligence and security clearly prioritise recruitment of violent so-called Islamists over disruption of their activities. The question is – what exactly are they recruiting them for?

At his trial, Bherlin Gildo’s lawyers provided detailed evidence that the British government itself had been arming and training the very groups that Gildo was being prosecuted for supporting. Indeed, Britain has been one of the most active and vocal supporters of the anti-government insurgency in Syria since its inception, support which continued undiminished even after the sectarian leadership and direction of the insurgency was privately admitted by Western intelligence agencies in 2012. Even today, with ISIS clearly the main beneficiaries of the country’s destabilization, and Al Qaeda increasingly hegemonic over the other anti-government forces, David Cameron continues to openly ally himself with the insurgency.

Is it really such a far-fetched idea that the British state, openly supporting a sectarian war against the Ba’athist government in Syria, might also be willfully facilitating the flow of British fighters to join this war? Britain’s long history of collusion with sectarian paramilitaries as a tool of foreign policy – in Ireland, Afghanistan and throughout the Gulf – certainly suggests this may be so.

Go to their article at: http://www.counterpunch.org/2016/04/05/british-collusion-with-sectarian-violence-in-syria/ for further information.

As for the reasons why the British government should want to overthrow Assad, my guess is that a number of them are about the geopolitics of the Middle East, as well as the Neo-Con, Neo-Lib urge to get their hands on the Syrian state’s assets and then sell them off, just as they did to Iraq. Assad’s regime is Ba’ath, which is secular, Arab nationalist and Socialist. They’re allied with the Russians and, although the country has not been in military conflict with Israel for some time, technically it is still at war. And oil may still be a priority, due to the proximity to several pipelines. On several of the American Conservative blogs after the Iraq invasion there were demands for the war to be expanded to oust Assad. My guess is that Britain is covertly following this policy by arming and supporting Islamist fighters.

If this is the case, then there’s a huge irony here. Islamists bitterly hate the state of Israel, and yet if they are being recruited by the West to overthrow Assad, they are being so as part of a strategy to defend Israel from a nation that has supported the Palestinians. Which should be a good reason for any prospective jihadi to think better of it and stay at home. As well as not becoming a murderous thug, whose organisations have done nothing but spread brutality, chaos and murder amongst the already beleaguered and suffering people of the Arab and Muslim world.
