Change.Org, the internet petitioning organisation, also has a petition to stop the charter flights deporting the Windrush migrants. Mike has a link to them on his blog. I’ve also signed the petition, and if you want to do so too, it’s address is at:

Petition Against the Deportations
May 1, 2018Change.Org Petition to Have Boris Johnson Step Down as Foreign Secretary
November 7, 2017There is now a petition on Change.Org for Boris Johnson to step down as Foreign Secretary because of his colossal, glaring ineptitude. The most recent example saw a women of dual British-Iranian nationality visiting friends for Nowruz, the Iranian New Year holiday, being arrested and threatened with imprisonment.
The explanation for the petition runs as follows
Boris Johnson has hit the headlines again for yet another gaffe.
Only this time in his muddle he said that British-Iranian mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe had been in Iran to train journalists last year when she was imprisoned at Evin Prison. Her family and workplace say this is wrong, that she is not a journalist, but was visiting family on holiday.
Because of Boris’ mistake, Nazanin’s time in prison could be doubled by Iranian officials. She is there for allegedly plotting to topple the government in Tehran, although official charges were never made public. Nazanin suffers depression from being separated from her husband and three year old daughter. I’ve heard first-hand of the physical and psychological torture as one of my own family members served a term there. Evin is Iran’s main holding place for political prisoners.
Our government should be working day and night get Nazanin back home to her family.
As a British citizen, I want to make sure we have a Foreign Secretary that supports us. Instead we have someone who is unfit for the job. Because he lobs grenades at sensitive situations. He lacks attention to detail. And in doing so, is a threat to British people and damaging overseas relations. That’s why I’m calling for Boris to step down from his role as Foreign Secretary.
This is not the only mistake Boris has made. Just last month he made jokes about clearing away dead bodies in Libya to turn Sirte into the next Dubai. And in the past, he ran a magazine which accused Liverpool fans of ‘wallowing in it’ after the Hillsborough disaster.
Boris must apologise, Boris must repair the damage he has done to Nazanin and her case but most importantly Boris must go.
I’ve signed it, as I’m heartily sick of his incompetence embarrassing us as a nation. And I’m sick and angry that an innocent woman, who has already suffered five years in Evin prison, has been interrogated and threatened with further imprisonment by the Iranian authorities, thanks to Boris shooting his mouth off.
Iran is a fascinating country with a rich, ancient culture. But it is a repressive theocracy with an intense suspicion of Britain and the West dating from the days of British imperialism, our ownership of its oil industry, and support for the Shah’s brutal autocracy. In the 1990s there was a thaw in diplomatic relations between our two countries, and there have been significant cultural exchanges since. For example, the YBAs a few years ago hosted a show in Iran, and the British Museum leant the Iranians the Cyrus Cylinder, which dates from the period of the Persian Empire and records the conquests of the emperor Cyrus the Great. One of these was the conquest of Babylonia and the Holy Land.
Yet relations are still very delicate. Mrs. Zaghari-Ratcliffe isn’t the only one, whose safety could be placed in jeopardy by this buffoon saying the wrong thing. The Iranians have in the past arrested other British travellers in Iran on suspicion of spying, and our diplomatic people have had to work hard getting them out.
And it’s not just Iran. There are many other similar societies, where British imperialism and its memory are very sensitive subjects. It’s all too easy to imagine something similar happening elsewhere due to Boris talking uninformed nonsense.
Johnson has refused to apologise for this dangerous mistake, preferring to place the blame on the Iranian authorities. I completely agree that they should not have acted as they did. But considering the nature of the Iranian regime, which is pretty well notorious, it is very incumbent on Boris to make sure that he avoids giving unnecessary offence, or a pretext for the Iranian authorities to act in this fashion.
I’m also heartily sick of Johnson trying to present himself as some kind of loveable buffoon, who means well despite everything he says and does. He isn’t. He’s a scheming intriguer, who’s fiercely ambitious. He obviously feels that as an Old Etonian he is entitled to a seat, if not the highest seat, in British government. And I’m fed up with his attitude that he can go one and do whatever he likes, regardless of the consequence for this nation, and the ordinary people, he puts in danger.

Books against Austerity and Corporate Power in Parliament
July 23, 2016Looking round Waterstone’s earlier in the day yesterday, I found a couple of books written against two of the leading political problems. One was Austerity, by Florian Schui. I found this in the business section. Written by an economist, the blurb on the back states that it shows through numerous examples why austerity doesn’t work, and how it is alien to capitalism. I didn’t buy it, as I’ve already got a number of books here I need read about the government’s failing economic policies and their cruel, mendacious and vicious attacks on the welfare state. I can’t therefore make any comments about it, except that a number of economists have repeatedly made the same point about austerity not working. Indeed, Basu and Stuckler make this point very early on in their The Body Economy: Why Austerity Kills. As for austerity being alien to capitalism, that is very much a novel viewpoint, as the response of the capitalists to recession has always been to demand cuts in wages and welfare spending, despite the fact that this harms the economy. This has also been repeatedly pointed out by economists and politicians like F.D. Roosevelt, Keynes and Tony Crosland. Crosland believed that the captains of industry should support the welfare state, as by giving workers extra money, the workers in turn supported industry through purchasing their products. Roosevelt made the same point when he introduced his very limited welfare reforms under the New Deal. But this is clearly a message the self-professed defenders of capitalism don’t want to hear, who would rather have the workers ground under food and placed in mass poverty, than given freedom, dignity, and greater purchasing power.
The other book was in the ‘new books’ section. This was entitled Parliament Inc. I’ve forgotten who it’s by, but it’s about how MPs are no longer working to represent us, but for the corporations, who fund their parties, supply staff and research experts, and offer them lucrative jobs afterwards through the revolving door. George Monbiot wrote something very similar a while ago in Corporate State, and Private Eye has been documenting the corporate corruption of politics for a very long time. Nevertheless, corporate power against the interests of the people politicians are supposed to represent has become a particularly acute issue over the past few years. One California businessman, who was actually a conservative, put out an internet petition to have members of Congress wear corporate logos on their jackets, where they had been sponsored by companies, rather than get their funding from ordinary people or their party. The corporate power of Wall Street, amongst others, is why the Democrat party dumped Bernie Sanders in favour of Shrillary through the votes of the ‘superdelegates’. It’s also very probably behind much of the New Labour attempts to oust Corbyn. Corbyn’s a radical, who threatens to end neoliberalism. And Blair and New Labour had a very cosy relationship with big business and corporate power. And hence the virulent denunciations of Jeremy Corbyn and his followers as Trotskyite hippies by the like of John Spellar.
I don’t think these books and their authors are isolated voices either. I think as time goes on, more and more authors, journalists and economists will start attacking neoliberalism and corporate power, as it becomes increasingly obvious that neoliberal economics aren’t working. And neither, thanks to the corporations, is parliament.
Hope Not Hate Petitions Tory Leadership to Allow EU Immigrants to Stay
July 4, 2016The anti-racist, anti-religious extremism organisation, Hope Not Hate, is supporting the campaign of the think tank, British Future, of writing to the Tory leadership candidates requesting them to grant EU immigrants, who are already here, the right to remain. They are requesting people to support their campaign by signing copies of the letter, in the same people sign internet petitions. The letter reads:
To the Conservative leadership candidates
The British public’s decision to leave the EU will bring many changes, most likely including changes to immigration and free movement rules.
There is considerable anxiety for the 3 million EU citizens who have made their homes in the UK, and the 1.2 million British citizens living in other EU countries. The Prime Minister’s post-referendum statement that there would be ‘no immediate changes’ to their status will have been less than fully reassuring.
This is also a vital concern for many British businesses and public services employing EU nationals, who do not want retrospective disruption to their existing workforce at a time of economic uncertainty.
We would urge you to make a clear and unequivocal statement that EU migrants currently living in the UK are welcome to stay here.
A clear, public commitment to protect the status of EU migrants was made by the official Vote Leave campaign – and it is important that is honoured.
By adopting this policy, the UK puts itself in a strong position to seek a clear reciprocal commitment from other EU members that EU citizens in the UK and UK nationals in other EU countries should be able to continue to live and work in those countries.
We believe there are principled, practical and legal reasons why this would be the only sensible and decent policy now that Britain has voted to Leave the EU. Research from ICM for British Future finds that 84% of the British public supports letting EU migrants stay – including three-quarters (77%) of Leave voters.
It would also send a clear statement to the extreme minority, who now appear to believe they have licence to attack and harass migrants and minorities, that the British public finds their views repugnant and unwelcome in our society.
Thanks
I’ve signed it, because I’m concerned about the stress and insecurity it has already given migrants, who have contributed to this country’s welfare by working and paying tax over here.
If you want to sign it also, you can find it over at the Hope Not Hate site at

The letter is contained in the moving banner, along with many of the organisation’s other campaigns, at the top of the page.
Vox Political on the Internet Petition for a Vote of No Confidence in 172 Rebel MPs
July 4, 2016Mike over at Vox Political has an article about a petition by the 38 degrees internet petitioning group, who are presenting a vote of no confidence in the 172 rebel Labour MPs, who are trying to bring down Jeremy Corbyn. The petition asks them to do the decent thing and resign. Mike in his comments about the petition leaves it entirely up to the reader whether to sign it or not.
See his article at: http://voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/07/03/new-petition-is-vote-of-no-confidence-in-labour-party-mutineers/
The petition states
Make your voice heard if you believe our country deserves a credible Labour Party that speaks to the country as a whole.
Why is this important?
The 172 treacherous Blarites in the Parliamentary Labour Party have shown that they are unfit to represent the Labour Party. They have also shown complete contempt for Labour Party members and supporters. Over the past week they have chosen their personal interests over the people of this country that deserve an effective opposition to our Conservative government.
This is a petition is for those who believe that for the benefit of Labour voters, for the benefit of all those millions who need a Labour government and for the sake of our politics, the 172 treacherous Blairites in the Parliamentary Labour Party should do the noble thing and resign.
If you want to sign it, it’s at: https://you.38degrees.org.uk/petitions/a-vote-of-no-confidence-in-the-172-blarites-in-the-parliamentary-labour-party
I’ve signed it, because I’m sick of Britain and its working people being betrayed by the Blairite clique that in 20 years of power have tried to turn the party into a carbon copy of the Tories. They stand for everything the Tories do: neoliberal economics based on private enterprise, the selling off of the NHS, and the increasing curtailment of welfare benefits. All of this is imperilling the health and wellbeing of Britain’s people, and destroying its economy. Millions have been forced into poverty through Thatcherite and Blairite policies. And all this has been done for the benefit of their extremely rich backers in big business and the media, like Rupert Murdoch. It’s time it stopped. Now.
38 Degrees Petition Against Government Control of BBC
March 26, 2016The internet petitioning group, 38 Degrees has also launched a petition against government proposals to give them the ability to choose the head and senior management of the BBC. Lorna Greenwood writes
This is the biggest threat to the BBC so far. John Whittingdale, the minister who’s deciding our BBC’s future, just announced he wants the government to choose the people who run the BBC. [1] It means our most trusted broadcaster could be left in the hands of a government that wants to see it fail.
Whittingdale sneaked out his devastating plan at the weekend, to a newspaper that’s behind a paywall. [1] He knows that another scandal might put a stop to his plans to undermine the BBC for good. [2] So he’ll be hoping that 38 Degrees members aren’t paying attention.
We’ve got to act fast. If enough us sign an emergency petition demanding the BBC stays independent, 38 Degrees members will deliver it to him in person early next week. And exposing his plans in public will shine a light on his real agenda to dismantle our BBC.
Please can you add your name to the emergency petition now?
The way decisions are made in the BBC is under review. [3] But John Whittingdale’s using this as an opportunity to push his anti-BBC agenda and put his people in charge. They would have the power to decide news coverage and which BBC programmes are made. [4] It could mean the end of the BBC as we know it.
Whittingdale’s feeling the pressure right now thanks to a series of damaging revelations on his plans for the BBC – including being caught lying about reading responses to the public consultation. [5] If we turn up the heat now, Whittingdale will have no option but to back down.
If thousands of us sign this emergency petition, then deliver it to him in just a few days, we could make Whittingdale realise that he’s fighting a losing battle and leave our BBC alone. This week could become the turning point in our people-powered campaign to protect the BBC.
Can you sign the emergency petition now? It’ll take less than 2 minutes:
The petition can be signed at: https://speakout.38degrees.org.uk/campaigns/keep-the-BBC-free-from-government-control.
If this is something you also feel strongly about, then please sign the petition. I’ve also done so.
I’ve felt it was important to do so because Berlosconi in Italy and Sarkozy in France used state control of the national broadcasting companies to remove from the airwaves shows, reporters and comedians that were critical of them. In the case of Berlo, this was the satirical comedy show, Rayot, after the show’s writer did a skit satirising Italy’s most pompous and totalitarian Right-wing politico since Mussolini. She later made an arthouse movie out of the affair, Viva Zapatero, named after the Spanish president, who removed the ability of his office to nominate the head of the state broadcaster.
If Whittingdale’s proposal goes ahead, not only will it give the government further leverage to privatise the Beeb, but it also means that, like the French and Italian state broadcasters, it will be under further government pressure to act as the government’s official mouthpiece. Not that it isn’t already spouting the lies fed it by the Tories. However, the situation will become worse. This, in my view, needs to be stopped. Now.
38 Degrees Petition to Keep Out Tax Dodging Privatisers from Bristol NHS
February 10, 2016There’s real concern that some of the private healthcare companies seeking to profit from NHS contracts include firms like Virgin Healthcare, who avoid paying tax in Britain through registration in offshore tax havens. 38 Degrees, the internet political petitioning group, have set up a petition in Bristol to stop such firms getting contracts in the Bristol NHS. According to the group, we’ve got about two weeks to stop parliament from opening up the health service to these profiteers. I signed the petition against them earlier this evening. If you have similar concerns about the NHS in Bristol, and wish to sign, here’s the link:
