Hope Not Hate on the Entry of the Alternative Fuer Deutschland into the German Parliament

September 28, 2017

Hope Not Hate, the anti-racist/anti-religious extremism organization also has a brief report and analysis of the massively increased support for the AfD in the German elections from their correspondent in the federal republic, Michael Klein. He notes that the Christian Democrats and the SDP lost 14 per cent of the vote. The Linke party, whose name means ‘Left’, and which has its basis in the former Communist party, also saw their share of the vote fall, but not to the same extent as the SPD. He states that the AfD now has 85 representatives in the German parliament, and will also see its supporters and officials benefit from other jobs, including sitting on the regulatory bodies for broadcasting, education and the secret service.

Despite this, the party is unstable and it could break up in the future. It is possible that it may split into an extreme and more moderate group, with the latter going into coalition with the Christian Democrats. This will not, however, happen before Christmas. In the meantime, it will demand that the other parties adopt a tougher line on immigration, crime and reverse the movement towards gender equality. They have also called on the Christian Democrats to become more right-wing.
