Diane Abbott Schooling Safid Javid: ‘The Windrush Generation Were Always British’

This is another great little video from the ‘Russian propaganda outlet’ RT. In it, the much vilified Diane Abbott takes the new Home Secretary, Safid Javid, to task for his comments and attitudes towards the Windrush generation.

Javid had said that he was determined to get the Windrush generation the legal status they deserved.

In her impassioned reply, Abbott states that the Windrush generation were always British. She states that it is her parents’ generation, and that Javid will be judged, not on his words, but by what he does.

Abbott is exactly right about the Windrush generation having always been British. Her colleague David Lammy in tweet that Vox Political reposted, showing the chapter and verse of the 1948 British Citizenship Act. This stated that citizens of the various countries in the British Empire were automatically British citizens. This is the act that was in force when the Windrush generation arrived.

However, the protections for them in the existing legislation were secretly removed by Tweezer and the Tories in the 2014. And now they have been arrested and forcibly removed from Britain to countries they left decades ago, or which, in the case of two young Black guys, they have never seen or been to.

Mike posted up a tweet from Joe Murphy this morning. Murphy quoted a poll by YouGov, which shows that something like 78 per cent of Black Londoners plan to vote Labour. Only 13 per cent say they will vote Tory. There’s an existing tendency for Blacks and ethnic minorities to vote Labour, but this certainly suggests that May and her treatment of the Windrush generation has just done more to increase it.
