I am very pleased that Jackie Walker has already received support challenging her sacking as Momentum’s Vice-Chair. Mike has put up today a statement by the Greater Manchester Momentum Black and Minority Ethnic Caucus, denouncing the removal of Jackie Walker from her post as Vice-Chair of Momentum, as undemocratic and a surrender to trial by media. They question why she was investigated by an all-White panel, when the organisation should have used its own Black activists. They state that this has damaged the organisation’s relationship with its Black activists, and that the Right has weaponised discrimination in order to pit Black and Jewish people against each other and manipulate their histories of oppression for their own ends. They also state that Momentum should have made a stand against that. They are also united in solidarity with their Jewish comrades, and maintain that a movement for socialism and liberation will never involve anti-Semitism or racism. They have also announced that they will release another, more extensive statement soon.
Mike states that he is very much looking forward to reading what they have to say.
I’m also very interested in reading this, and hope that everyone, who genuinely believes in anti-racism, justice and Socialism, regardless of colour, religion or ethnicity, will support Jackie Walker. I would also suggest that Momentum’s members and supporters be extremely careful about this, also. The Right dearly wants to destroy Momentum. They have tried to argue that it should be expelled from the Labour party as an entryist group, and I’ve no doubt that with this latest development, they will be delighted at having caused division within the movement. We cannot afford to give them the satisfaction of doing their job for them. Let’s remember that it is Momentum and the Labour ‘left’ – actually, just Centre Left, including those the Israel lobby has denounced as anti-Semitic – who have done the most in the Labour party to forward Black issues. Ken Livingstone has an entire chapter in his 1987 book, Livingstone’s Labour, entitled ‘Labour Didn’t Listen to Black People’. It’s on page 62 of that book that he states categorically that he is against all forms of racism, whether against Blacks, Jews or the Irish. And his book contains several chapters describing and denouncing the recruitment of Nazis by the British intelligence services to help in their struggle against Communism. These were the real, vile thing – people who had actively participated in the pogroms and the Holocaust, and not the decent people, who have been smeared by the Israel lobby through distortion and insinuation. People like Livingstone himself, Jackie Walker, and any number of others.
Momentum and Jeremy Corbyn are this country’s greatest hope of fighting against the neoliberalism and Thatcherite poison that is destroying our country, and which has destroyed the lives and livelihoods of so many of our people. We can’t afford to let the Right win, and destroy this great movement for real change through a cynical exploitation of racial issues.
It is therefore my sincere hope that Mrs Walker will be reinstated, and that this will be settled swiftly and in an amicable and conciliatory manner.
