Private Eye on Daily Express Hack’s Defection from Brexit

Mike yesterday ran the story about the defection of MP Sarah Wollaston, a doctor, who chairs the Commons Health Committee, from the Vote Leave campaign, citing her discomfort over the group’s false claims. This included the specific claim that Britain was spending £350 million a week or so on the EU.

Wollaston isn’t the only Brexiteer to break ranks and start supporting Remain. A month ago, Private Eye in its issue for 29th April-12th May 2016 reported how a hack on the Daily Express, Greg Swift, who was responsible for a series of anti-EU articles urging British voters to back the Leave campaign, left the paper to work for the Dave Cameron in Downing Street. This will necessarily mean that he would end up working for Remain. The Eye wrote

Swivel Lips

As assistant editor (news) at the Daily Express, Greg Swift has helped head up the paper’s “Special Crusade” to ensure votes for Brexit in recent weeks.

The crusade has featured front-page splashes such as “ILLEGAL MIGRANTS FLOODING INTO EU”, “EU WANTS CONTROL OF YOUR PENSION”, “NOW BATTLE FOR BRITAIN BEGINS”, and “NONSENSE! TREASURY’S EU EXIT SUMS DON’T ADD UP” – but it reached its zenith on 16th April, when the paper gave away a free piece of sticky-backed plastic depicting the white cliffs of Dover and urged its readers to “let this sticker be the standard under which the nation unites to strike a mighty blow for freedom and democracy”.

Last week, however, it was announced that Swift is off to a new job: after nearly two decades at the Express he is to become head of news at Number 10 and deputy spokesman to David Cameron. Despite an attempt by Express editor Hugh Whittow to make him work out his three-month notice period in full, Swift will start in Downing Street on 3 May – which will put him right at the centre of the campaign to stay in the EU and obliged him to spend his days countering the sort of swivel-eye froth he has been enthusiastically serving up so far. (p. 7).

This makes you wonder just how malleable are the other consciences behind the campaign.
