Vox Political: Cameron Trying to Squirm out of Apologising for ISIS Accusations

Mike over at Vox Political has put up a piece reporting that Cameron is trying to squirm out of having to apologise to the Muslim imam he accused of supporting ISIS, Suliman Gani. Gani’s an associate of Sadiq Khan, and so this was a nasty attempt to smear Mr Khan by implication. In fact, Gani strongly denies he supports ISIS, and as Mike reports, the claim fell apart just about immediately it was examined.

Downing Street ties itself in knots after David Cameron claims British citizen ‘supports IS’ without evidence

Considering the magnitude of the smear, Cameron should make a full apology to Mr Gani ASAP. He has yet to do so, and it appears he is doing his level best to weasel his way out of it. Mike reports that according to the Mirror, he is now saying that he thinks all of the speakers were supporters of the creation of an Islamic state, as it was reported at the time. So he’s retreated from definitely saying that Mr Gani is, to saying that he thinks he was, according to reports at the time.

This simply isn’t good enough. Unless Cameron has firm, incontrovertible evidence that Mr Gani supported ISIS, he should swallow his enormous pride and make a full, unreserved apology.
