Vox Political: Ministers Go to Arms Trade Dinner Hours after Parliament Recommends Stopping Arms Sales to Saudi Arabia

The determination of this government to profit from the bloodshed in Yemen, despite the humanitarian concerns of both the British parliament and the international community is astonishing. Mike over at Vox Political has this report about the Defence Secretary, Michael Fallon, and other ministers attending a very expensive banquet on Tuesday night in support of ADS, one of the trade organisations for the merchants of death: http://voxpoliticalonline.com/2016/02/03/ministers-wined-and-dined-by-arms-trade-hours-after-mps-demand-ban-on-selling-weapons-to-saudi-arabia/. In the past there have been a series of scandals as many Tory MPs have had personal links to arms manufacturers. I don’t doubt that’s the case here as well.

The rationale for the British government pushing arms sales is that this will open up those countries to further British trade. The hope is that the nations buying our arms and military equipment will go on and buy other British goods. And it’s completely wrong. That never happens. After buying British weapons, they only go on to buy more British weapons. On the other hand, it does lead to former defence secretaries and MOD senior civil servants getting lucrative jobs on the boards of the arms manufacturers.
