Unthinkable? Could Lord Rothermere’s vitriolic attacks on Ed Miliband be because he’s Jewish?

Tom Pride bases his question not only on the Daily Mail’s history of supporting Hitler, promoting the BUF and the infamous anti-Semitic forgery, the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, but also on its recent support for far-right parties such as the Front National in France and Pegida in Germany.

The paper’s attacks on Miliband and immigrants is ironic, considering that the Harmsworth family also consider themselves outsiders. They’re Irish in origin, who also have a history of colonisation and subjugation by the British. In the 19th century racial theorists decided that Gaels, like the Irish and Highland Scots, were the least ‘evolved’ of Europe’s peoples. Some went even further, and decided that they were even lower on the racial scale that Blacks.

My guess is that Rothermere’s anti-Semitism, if it exists, is selective. Jews are all right, so long as they’re like Michael Howard and support the Tories. If they support Labour and show solidarity with the rest o of the hoi polloi, then all the prejudices begin to show.

And even if the Harmsworth family aren’t anti-Semitic, they show all the class prejudices and hatreds of the British aristocracy against immigrants and commoners. Of course, in the 1930s the British aristocracy also thought very highly of Adolf Hitler, so even without anti-Semitism, we’re back to the question of Nazi sympathies again.

In fact, the attacks are so personal I’m even starting to think the unthinkable.

Could it be because Ed Miliband is Jewish?

Don’t be so naive to think there aren’t still members of the British establishment who really really hate the idea of somebody with a Jewish background being Prime Minister.

And after all, Rothermere and his newspaper the Daily Mail have a shameful history of anti-Semitism.

In the 1930s, the newspaper supported Hitler as well as Oswald Mosley and his British Union of…
