Is Iain Duncan Smith Bullshitting About Universal Credit? Of Course He Fucking Is

Johnny Void here critiques ‘Underpants’ Iain Duncan Smith’s continued promotion of Universal Credit, pointing out that its conclusions are inconclusive at the moment. The stats used by Smith to tout is as a success are very carefully chosen. Among the statistics that IDS definitely won’t like is the figure that 55 per cent of claimants thought that some or all of the agreement were a waste of time, and 76 per cent believed that they Jobcentre would spy on them to check they were looking for work.
As for IDS promoting UC as a great success – of course he is. This, along with brutally throwing claimants off benefits to starve in the street, is his big idea. He has no others, and in most respects is a thoroughly dismal mediocrity. He needs to promote this in order to convince the electorate that his tenure of office hasn’t been the total failure it is.

Alongside the Secretary of State’s rare appearances in the media this week, the DWP released a gushing report claiming that Universal Credit was already a huge success.  This document was based on cherry-picked information from two recent evaluations of the pilot scheme currently running in the North West of England which looked at the impact of the roll out of Universal Credit.
