Murdoch’s Sun bought name and home address of rape complainant

The reputation of the Fourth Estate in this country is already low. It’s no accident that the column in Private Eye reporting the misdeeds and tittle-tattle about the Press is called ‘Street of Shame’, or that the magazine has referred to certain types of journalist as ‘reptiles’. Spitting Image, you will remember, used to portray generic journalists as vultures with trilby hats and press passes. Alan Coren, one of the most brilliant satirists of the 20th century, in my opinion, used to give journalists in his skits names like ‘Sid Filth’. With all due respect to the numerous quality journos still trying to get and tell the difficult news stories with high ethical standards, this shows just how low the morals of the tabloid press are.

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the UK press!)

(not satire – it’s the UK tabloid press!)

In the UK, rape complainants have a statutory right to anonymity throughout their lifetime.

The UK press however seem to think they are above mere laws.

Which is probably why Murdoch’s Sun thought it was OK for it to buy the identity – full name, witness statements and even address – of a woman who had made a rape complaint against two Surrey police officers:

SUN REPORTER PAID POLICE OFFICER FOR STORY ABOUT THE AFTERMATH OF AN ALLEGED RAPE BY TWO SURREY POLICE OFFICERS

Never mind. After Leveson, all of that bad behaviour by the tabloids is behind us now, isn’t it?

Because now, if you’ve got a complaint about a newspaper you can always apply to the newly set-up press complaints body to investigate.

Just write to the body’s chairman, Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre.
