Lib Dem councillor represents his ward – from Saudi Arabia

This isn’t the only time a local councillor has been caught living outside his or her constituency. Private Eye has printed dozens of stories like this in its ‘Rotten Boroughs’ column. Usually, however, the councillor is still within the country, just about 300 miles away from their constituency. I think, however, that there have been cases where at least once councillor has been caught claiming to represent their local community from, er, America, and India.

Pride's Purge

(not satire – it’s the Lib Dems!)

A Lib Dem council leader is collecting £13,000 per year as a local councillor despite living and working in Saudi Arabia.

Councillor Paul Whittle is the Lib Dem opposition leader on Fareham Borough Council but instead of representing residents in his Fareham East ward he decided to take a £180,000 job more than 4,000 miles away:

According to Cllr Whittle, he can represent his constituents from half-way around the world just as well as from Britain because “he could be contacted via email and phone“.

I have a feeling that come the next local elections, Cllr Whittle’s constituents might think otherwise.
